7 Stages on Horseback from O Cebreiro

Horseback Camino de Santiago from O Cebreiro

We will welcome all participants by meeting at the agreed location and transferring to the accommodations where we will be staying. We will settle in, and before dinner we will hold a short meeting to briefly explain the itinerary we will follow over the coming days. We will also take the opportunity to discuss the equipment and materials we may need during our pilgrimage to Santiago.

French Way from O Cebreiro

O Cebreiro is a region of unique beauty in Galicia, thanks to its deep forests, high mountains, and the well-preserved cultural and architectural heritage. It is an area often shrouded in mist for most of the year, shaped by the harsh conditions of a mountain pass.
The Camino to Santiago from here is divided into six stages, descending from this mountain range toward Sarria, Melide, and Arzúa, passing through countless small villages across the Galician landscape.

O Cebreiro – Triacastela

We will traverse the mountainous terrain of O Cebreiro up to the San Roque viewpoint at 1,270 meters above sea level, where we will visit the Pilgrim Monument.

During this day, we will pass through Hospital da Condesa, Alto do Poio, Fonfría, Viduedo, Fillobal on the way to Triacastela, the end of the stage where we will rest and recharge our energy before continuing our pilgrimage the next day.

Triacastela – Sarria

From Triacastela to Sarria we will pass through: Fontearcuda, Furela, Aguiada, O Carballal, Sarria center, Rente, Leiman, Peruscallo, and Cortiñas.

During this stage we will arrive in Sarria, a town in the province of Lugo, world-famous as the most popular starting point for the French Way of St. James.

Sarria – Portomarín

From Sarria to Portomarín we will pass through: Lavandeira, Brea, Morgade, Ferreiros, Mirallos, Pena, Rozas, Moimentos, Mercadoiro-Cotarelo, Mourras, A Parrocha, Vilachá, Gonzar, Castromaior, and O Alto do Hospital.

During this stage, we will catch our first glimpse of the Miño River—the most famous in Galicia—peeking through the tree branches.

Portomarín – Palas de Rei

From Portomarín to Palas de Rei we will continue along rural paths, passing through small villages and green landscapes typical of the interior of Lugo and the beginning of the Compostela region.

We will enjoy a peaceful stage with gentle terrain and beautiful Galician scenery.

Palas de Rei – Arzúa

We will leave Palas de Rei behind and head toward the Arzúa region along paths with few slopes, shaded by scattered woodlands that connect the many small settlements we will encounter throughout this stage.

In the photo we see the church of Vilar de Donas, dating from the early 13th century, a great example of Romanesque architecture in Galicia.

Arzúa – Monte do Gozo

We will say goodbye to Arzúa and head toward Santiago de Compostela. This stage brings the greatest anticipation, as the proximity of Compostela heightens the pilgrim’s desire to reach the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

The final stage of the journey is no less demanding than the previous ones. We will need to calm the soul and adjust our pace to reach the top of Monte do Gozo, the end of the stage, from where the Cathedral can already be seen in the distance across the valley where the city of Santiago lies.

Monte do Gozo – Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela

Congratulations, Pilgrim, you have reached your destination. The experience of the Camino de Santiago will stay with you for the rest of your life, along with every lesson learned during this spiritual journey.

Now is the time to ride into the Praza do Obradoiro on horseback, then get our credentials stamped at the Pilgrim’s Office in Santiago, and enjoy the dreamlike surroundings of the city of Santiago.
Pilgrim’s Mass, credential delivery, and the end of the adventure.
