Horseback Camino de Santiago – Arrival in Logroño

Welcome and meeting point in Logroño. Transfer to the stables and accommodation. After dinner we will have an informal briefing to answer any questions and go over the adventure that starts tomorrow.
Perfect time to check your luggage and make sure you have everything you need for the trail.

Logroño

Logroño is the capital of La Rioja and the historic crossroads of the Camino. Its name comes from the Celtic “Illo Gronio” (the ford), referring to the crossing of the river Ebro.
Highlights: the Co-cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda, the Espolón park, and the famous Calle Laurel for pintxos.

Nájera → Castidelgado

We visit charming Nájera and its Monastery of Santa María la Real. We ride through vineyards and fields along the river Tuerto, stop for lunch in Santo Domingo de la Calzada (famous cathedral and legend of the rooster), and finish in Castidelgado (Burgos province, Burgos).

Castidelgado → Atapuerca

We enter the province of Burgos, passing through villages such as Viloria de Rioja, Villamayor del Río and Tosantos. Lunch stop and horse rest in Villambistia. Overnight in world-famous Atapuerca (prehistoric archaeological site).

Atapuerca → Tardajos (Burgos)

Arrival in majestic Burgos – its Gothic cathedral is breathtaking. We enjoy the services of the city and continue across the Castilian plain. Overnight in Tardajos.

Tardajos → Castrojeriz

Flat stage with beautiful views of the castle of Castrojeriz. Lunch in Hontanas and visit to the evocative ruins of San Antón monastery.

Castrojeriz → Villalcázar de Sirga

Long stage across the Tierra de Campos. Lunch in romantic Frómista (San Martín de Tours church – pure Romanesque jewel). Overnight in Villalcázar de Sirga and its Templar church of Santa María la Blanca.

Villalcázar de Sirga → Calzadilla de la Cueza

Short and pleasant stage. We visit Carrión de los Condes and its impressive monastery of San Zoilo. Overnight in Calzadilla de la Cueza.

Calzadilla de la Cueza → El Burgo Ranero

Long day across the plains of León province. Lunch in historic Sahagún. Overnight in El Burgo Ranero next to its beautiful lagoon.

El Burgo Ranero → Valdelafuente (León area)

We cross the impressive Puente Villarente and enjoy the services of Mansilla de las Mulas. Overnight in Valdelafuente.

Valdelafuente → Villadangos del Páramo

We skirt the city of León (we will see the cathedral from afar) and cross the river Bernesga. Lunch at La Virgen del Camino sanctuary. Overnight in Villadangos del Páramo.

Villadangos del Páramo → Astorga

Famous medieval jousting festival in Hospital de Órbigo. Lunch in gastronomic Santíbañez de Valdeiglesias. Arrival in beautiful Astorga (Palace of Gaudí & Roman history).

Astorga → Rabanal del Camino

We begin the ascent to the León mountains. Picturesque villages of Castrillo de los Polvazares (famous for cocido maragato) and Santa Catalina de Somoza. Overnight in charming Rabanal del Camino.

Rabanal del Camino → Ponferrada

We cross the mythical Cruz de Ferro, visit abandoned Foncebadón, and descend into El Bierzo region. Lunch in beautiful Molinaseca. Arrival in Ponferrada and its Templar castle.

Ponferrada → Trabadelo / Villafranca del Bierzo</h4] We ride through vineyards of El Bierzo. Visit to Villafranca del Bierzo and its “Door of Forgiveness”. Overnight in the Valcarce valley.

Trabadelo → O Cebreiro

Mountain stage. We gain altitude and enter Galicia through the magical village of O Cebreiro and its pre-Roman pallozas.

O Cebreiro → Samos / Triacastela

Galician mountain scenery with pallozas and green valleys. Lunch in Triacastela. Overnight near the impressive Monastery of Samos.

Samos → Portomarín</h4] Deep Galician countryside. We ride among chestnut and oak forests. Arrival in Portomarín and its church-fortress moved stone by stone.

Portomarín → Palas de Rei</h4] Classic Galician stage with countless small villages and hórreos (traditional granaries). Overnight in Palas de Rei.

Palas de Rei → Arzúa

Pleasant stage through eucalyptus forests. Lunch in Melide (best pulpo in Galicia!). Overnight in Arzúa, land of famous cheese.

Arzúa → Monte do Gozo</h4] The excitement grows. We ride through eucalyptus forests and small villages. First glimpse of the cathedral towers from Monte do Gozo.

Monte do Gozo → Santiago de Compostela Cathedral

The grand finale! We enter the old town on horseback, hear the bells of the cathedral, and arrive at the Praza do Obradoiro. Pilgrim’s Mass, Compostela certificate, and celebration. Congratulations, pilgrim!
