6 horseback stages from Ponte da Lima

Camino de Santiago on horseback from Ponte da Lima

We begin our adventure in Ponte da Lima, from where over the next few days we will ride 143 kilometres on horseback to reach the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
We will meet all participants at the accommodation where we will spend the first night and hold an information meeting to answer any questions about our pilgrimage to Santiago.

Portuguese Way from Ponte da Lima

Our adventure starts in Ponte da Lima, the oldest town in Portugal and declared a Historic-Artistic Site (World Heritage). It offers pilgrims many monuments to visit.
It’s time to calm the spirit, check the luggage and rest so we can start tomorrow refreshed for the stages ahead.

Ponte da Lima – Fontoura

At dawn we leave Ponte da Lima to ride the first stage of our pilgrimage to Santiago, ending the day in the municipality of Fontoura.

Along the way we will pass through places such as Mouro, Salgueiro, Codeçal, Agualonga (home to the Roman milestone of Caracalla), Rubiães, São Bento da Porta Aberta and Cerdal, where we cross the Roman Bridge of Pedreira hidden among the forests.

Fontoura – O Porriño

Second stage of our horseback pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela still on Portuguese soil.

This is the last day before entering Galicia. At the end of the stage we will cross the international bridge over the river Miño that connects both countries. We descend to the riverbank, cross the water and arrive in Tui, a town of stunning beauty declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1967.
From there the route continues to O Porriño, where we finish the stage and spend the night.

O Porriño – Pontevedra

Third stage: we leave O Porriño, visit Redondela and then ride the path that links Cesantes with Arcade and Pontesampaio.

One of the highlights of the day is the Roman bridge of Pontesampaio over the river Verdugo, famous for the battle of the Spanish War of Independence (7-8 June 1809) that ended five months of French occupation.

Pontevedra – As Cernadas

A pleasant day riding through Galician lands towards Caldas de Reis, known as the garden and spa town of Galicia. We will pass through Alba, San Amaro and Tivó before reaching the banks of the river Umia where Caldas de Reis stands.

We will rest in As Cernadas to regain strength before the final stretch that will bring the city of Santiago de Compostela into view.

As Cernadas – O Milladoiro

Today our horses will guide us to Padrón, the town that crosses the river Sar, immortalised in the poems of the famous Galician writer Rosalía de Castro.

Along the way we will leave behind places such as Santa Mariña de Carracedo, Valga, Cimadevilla and Pontecesures.

O Milladoiro – Santiago de Compostela

The grand finale has arrived! At dawn we ride the last stretch on horseback to Santiago de Compostela.

We will enter on horseback into the Praza do Obradoiro and say goodbye to the group in the shadow of the Cathedral, with the spirit of our pilgrimage in our hearts.
